I have a question about color mixing, maybe you have done a video on this but I can't find anything about it, anywhere. I am wondering how to handle paint on the palette. If I am mixing a yellow and a blue to find a hue I like, can I load my brush with yellow and then dip in the blue right away (possibly getting yellow in the blue) or do I need to clean my brush each time? I am working on color theory, so mixing my pure warm colors and cold colors eeks me, but if it is the way of the watercolor I am down. Just not sure about best practices? Or maybe it's personal preferences? I don't know...any guidance would be greatly appreciated. And the more I think about this, maybe it's obvious and I am too rigid, but I wanted to know your thoughtd.

Nature journaling was very helpful for me learning to see/draw and also stop focusing on making a “pretty picture” and instead just create what I was seeing. It became okay for what I created to not be perfect. Because I expected perfection previously I was always disappointed and frustrated. I also used a cheap journal and colored pencils (which were not my favorite medium) and that helped me to just do it, and not be scared I’m going to ruin it or waste my time. After doing that for several months I got some professional quality watercolors and now only use them. But that time with just creating and having fun was imperative for me to actually start making something and not get obsessed with the final product.

Jenna, I am just getting back into painting and delving into watercolor for the first time. I’ve painted in other mediums and different technics but have been away from painting for quite awhile. my biggest struggle with all of the painting I’ve done and with watching tutorials is that I am left handed. Learning different strokes is frustrating. Any advice? Other than just watch only left handed instructors. Thank you. Kathy

I love trees as well. Before I got into watercolors, my eye was always drawn to trees, the bark texture, the overall shape and shading. This is what I need to do - start sketching.

Yesterday I did your tutorial on sketching trees and that is when I got the light bulb moment about looking at things in shapes. This is so, so helpful and am so glad I have found your site.

Er, your mom was “creatively inclined” 😉, not obsessed. My father is really really “into” photography and my mother “likes” to paint, dance, sing, and mold wet clay. Like you, I too have a “thing” for trees. 😁 I must put them in my sketches. Thank you for the tips on drawing trees. Too many ignore their beauty because they look tedious to sketch in. This was awesome!
